New York is the most populous city in the United States. More than 8 million people crowd the streets of the business, financial, and media capital of the world. But the tapestry of life above ground merely scratches the surface. Beneath the pavement lies another world, separate from but intimately connected to life above. One billion people pass through the turnstiles of the New York City subway system each year; one billion journeys, each with its own story. My collection of photographs of the Subway over the years chronicles our ever-changing city, through the dark days of the pandemic and into the city’s recovery and renaissance in the years after, capturing a slice of New York history beneath the surface.
